This is me. Eating an apple at the Boulevard Hotel studio suite this morning. It sounds like a mundane (understatement of the year) post, which it is, but I'm trying to make it sound interesting. There really is a discrepancy in the picture above...

Check out my new cuff links. ;)

Fireworks surprise at the girlfriend's house

| 21 Comments | No TrackBacks
universal battle

I remember having a batch of fireworks from the previous Chinese New Year and decided to give my girlfriend a surprise at 12 midnight last night (technically, today). I carried the firework cake configuration to her house with my car lights dimmed and called her to come out for a while. I had planned to deploy the fireworks just opposite the road outside the house - a hit and run affair, since fireworks are not exactly legal in Malaysia. ;)

universal battle deploy

This is "Universal Battle" a cake configuration of 13 shots (which is not an inauspicious number for the Chinese, unlike the Caucasians) and I drove over to her place with it on my passenger seat and dimmed my car lights when I got to her place before coming out with the fireworks and a lighter.

She was already standing outside when I lit the fuse and was quite puzzled by my "Shh..." motions and gestures to ask her to stay put and wait:

This is the fireworks surprise to cheer Melody up, which didn't go exactly as planned...but she still enjoyed it. Happy half-weeksary after monthsary, dear! =D

Postmortem:

I could have pulled off the fireworks stunt a little bit better with proper planning. The place was a residential area and letting off (loud) fireworks at night led to a barking spree by all the dogs in the area which woke up just about everyone in the place.

I should think everything through at least three times due to my impulsive nature and stop doing anything while inebriated since it'll probably not turn out to be the way I expected it to be.

I had prepared a text message saying "Surprise! I love you dear. Hope you enjoyed the display.", but in hindsight it probably left a bad impression, despite the Hari Raya festive cheer since...well, letting off fireworks in the middle of the road of a residential house is not exactly the kind of stuff parents root for. ;)

She had the remote so it would have been much better if I had let her in the car, went to a public park, let off the fireworks and gave her a quick hug and kiss before sending her back. It would have been much more meaningful (and tactful) since I wouldn't have woken up the entire neighborhood. She would have enjoyed the display better in a private moment and it would still retain the Surprise Factor (TM).

Oh well, I'll do it better next time. :)

Melody enjoyed the surprise, and that's all that matters to me. Cheers all!

The evolution of Chinese names

gf writing

This is my Chinese name as written by Melody. I don't know how to write my own Chinese name except for the middle character (coz it has less strokes and thus, is easier to remember). The translation is "Fu Huai Bin" - pronounced "foo why bin" but it's written as Poh Huai Bin officially coz that's how the Heng Hua translate the Chinese character for "Fu".

Poh (the first character) is my family name a.k.a last name. It's inherited and does not have any significance to it. Someone told me a very interesting anecdote about family names though - he said that we don't actually have family names. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away (actually, just Ancient China) we only have one name e.g.

Bin

Those are feudal times, so the lesser ones amongst us went to work for the richer (land owning) ones. Let's say that I was born in a very poor family and went to work for a landowner named Poh. Back then, it wouldn't be a 9 - 5 job but some backbreaking Biblical toil and labor stuff.

chinese name 1

Now, there are probably a lot of Bins out there so I'll be called Poh's Bin - to avoid being confused with, say, Tiong's Bin. Thus, my name will literally be "Poh Ah Bin" e.g. The Bin from The House of Tiong.

Once, I've made it big and have my own property, I will have my own plot of land and have slaves working under me e.g. Fong, Tang, Ching, Hong. Tang will be called Bin Ah Tang "Tang from The House of Bin".

chinese name 2

Over the years, we evolved with the times and started getting customized names. However, the Chinese never dropped the surname (family name) so the ones that are in current circulation were the rich and land owning folks from the feudal times.

I don't know how historically accurate the anecdote is, but it's quite interesting nevertheless. Anyway back to my name, the Poh doesn't actually mean anything - it's the family name/last name so my name would be Huai Bin.

phb chinese

Huai means Caring
Bin is made up of two words - Wen (Scholar) and Wu (Warrior)

so my name is The Caring Scholar-Warrior from The House of Poh.

...but please, just call me Huai Bin. ;)

The Great Sarawak Blackout

| 15 Comments | No TrackBacks
blackout

The entire state of Sarawak experienced a total blackout last night with confirmed areas being affected including Sibu and Kuching. The traffic lights were not working and I'm sure quite a few fender benders occurred when two unyielding parties collide (pun intended). :)

blackout dinner

It felt like going back to the Dark Ages (haha) with all the shops closing down (probably to prevent theft and also due to the non-functioning electricity-dependent POS machines) but most restaurants remained open. We made the most of the ambiance...romantic candlelight dinner konon. ;)
my weight

I just weighted myself at a weighing scale and noticed that I am now clocking in at a rather  respectable (?) 69.2 kg.

me on scale

This is approximately a 10 kg increase from my previous weight (before rehab) and I had a friend relate to me how gaining 10 kg actually feels, but since it's so subtle and nefarious you don't actually realize it. It's called The Rice Theory (TM).

turtle rice

The Rice Theory (TM) was related to me during dinner just now by my friend who watched me binge on food and then went with me to the mall for the weighing machine and it goes like this:

lugging rice

Pick up a 10 kg bag of rice from your nearest mall and try lugging that around. Imagine yourself carrying that 10 kg bag of rice. The. Entire. Day. Everywhere you go. 24/7. That's how gaining 10 kg of weight feels like.

Jesus Christ, I need more exercise...

Accident: 7 car pileup at Brooke Drive

| 4 Comments | No TrackBacks
brooke drive pileup

There was a 7 car pileup in Brooke Drive last night. The roads were wet and slick from the rain, granted, but there was a great deal of debate as to how it actually happened. It's very unusual for such a high number of cars to be involved in an accident in Sibu, especially when the average speed people drive at on that road is 50-60 km.

flight of the wira

This one takes the cake - the car flew over the road divider and crashed head on with a stationary truck repairing a street light. It's amazing how little visible damage it suffered considering the flight and target (a truck, for Christ's sake).

brooke drive accident

Six other cars were involved in fender benders behind on the lane turning left. There were a couple of police around to redirect traffic and the people involved in the accident standing around under umbrellas.

I still can't figure out how it happened. My current theory is that the first car was speeding, lost control and ran over the road divider to the other side of the road and crashed into the stationary truck repairing a light fixture. The car behind him probably stepped on the brakes and the car behind him was rubbernecking The Flight of the Proton Wira so he crashed into the second car resulting in the other three cars behind him/her crashing into him.

Blogger reputations

rep

I seem to have earned (?) myself a reputation for being something of a playboy, from the feedback I have been receiving from friends and coworkers as of late. It seems that this is solely due to the amount of photos of different chicks, I'm sorry, I mean females I have on the blog. I've been asked not to put up certain photos from girls with boyfriends for fear of being tarred and feathered by their boyfriends and from being labeled a "sixthseal.com chick",

I should be quick to claim that most of the girls are my friends and the arm over the shoulder thing is just a manifestation of the "buddy buddy" thing. I do it with both guys and girls, and no one comments about the male photos. I had a discussion about this with my boss just now and the case of Tony Fernandez with his arms around two flight attendants came into play.

Now, since he has his arms around them, he's obviously fucking them, or that's what the general public thinks (over here in this small town anyway). I think it's nice of him to do the "chummy" thing with his cabin crew. It's just how people look at things.

I have had a lot of comments that I must be a player due to the number of chicks that are featured on my blog, but it should be noted that most are just friends.

What do you think?

Tongue Piercing Photos and Video

borneo headhunters

Greetings! I am blogging from Starbucks in Kuching while waiting for my flight back to Sibu. I have been planning to get another tongue piercing and managed to squeeze it into this brief trip - perhaps a more apt word would be a layover - thanks to Irene, who kindly drove us around Kuching.

preparation

This is my third tongue piercing in as many years. The first tongue piercing was involved in an unfortunate incident during a routine dental hygiene maintenance procedure where the screw-on ball dropped down the sink. I didn't have a replacement, considering piercings were not common then so the piercing healed up.

clamp 1

The second piercing was subjected to an accidental ingestion during a particularly delectable feast - again with the screw-on ball - and I couldn't find the backup stud I had in storage. I wasn't particularly keen on waiting for it to reappear after a bowel movement and screwing it back on so it healed up on me as well.

clamp 2

This trip to Kuching was meant to be a layover before we went to Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort so I only had the evening to squeeze in a trip to The Spring, get a tongue piercing and go out clubbing before heading for our R&R at the resort. I made an appointment with Ernesto of Borneo Headhunters Tattoo and Piercing for 6 pm.

clamp 3

Unfortunately, Ernesto ran out of tongue studs and Irene was kind enough to drive me to Rupert Rage War Store in Centerpoint to get the jewelery for the piercing. I got a standard surgical steel tongue stud plus a more vociferous design for nights out. I reckon it's better to get two this time just in case any undue ingestion or bathroom incidents affected the first one.

This is the video of my third tongue piercing. I'm pleased with my travel companion's directing skillz since it turned out pretty well. The tongue piercing is a little off center but I kinda like the way it looks now. It's a little more interesting than a straight piercing and I have it on good authority that it feels better in this configuration. My travel companion commented that I was quite a cunning linguist after the procedure. ;)

ernesto

It cost me RM 50 for the piercing only (RM 120 if you want a stud to be provided). Thanks Ernesto!

Genting Highlands Indoor Arcade

genting funtasy world

Genting Highlands has an indoor arcade and theme park which people throng through during the night when the outdoor theme park is closed.

genting indoor arcade

The indoor arcade is called Funtasy World and has rides, simulations and games. I went with Rene after a session in the casino. The credits come in a swipe card instead of coins.

Gunshot

genting gunshot

Gunshot is a game where a digital rifle is fired upon targets at monitor screens about 5 meters away. The game allows 30 shots for RM 10 and its quite fun to play around with.

genting gunshot me

The rifle is attached to a cord which registers a hit when the bull eye is hit by the rifle. I played with this game for quite a while. It's like a digital shooting range.

Premier K-Box

genting kbox

The K-Box is a self enclosed kiosk that allows you to choose from a variety of songs for karaoke singing. One song is RM 2 and there is a touch screen to select from.

Harley-Davidson motorbike simulation

genting harley

I also got on the Harley-Davidson motorcycle simulation though the streets of LA. You literally have to steer the motorbike using the actual size of the Harley-Davidson.

Bass Fishing

genting bass fishing

Rene played the more passive bass fishing simulator. There is a cord attached to a real fishing rod that you use to fish with.

Top Skater

genting skate

Top Skater by SEGA Skateboarding is another simulator that we got on. It's pretty fun coz the control is via an actual skateboard attached to the arcade machine.

Namco Trackball

genting trackball

There was also this weird game by Namco where you roll a trackball like device which I played with Rene. I don't know what it's supposed to do so we just guessed and I won the game. Heh!

Namco Drums

genting drums

One of the more exotic games is the Namco drum arcade game where you hit the huge drums. The game play is pretty unusual and I like arcade machines with unusual control schemes.

SEGA Dinosaur King

genting card game

I don't know how to play this game but I went on it anyway. It's some kind of card battle game like Magic: The Gathering except it's in Japanese and I couldn't figure out what to do.

Kart Duel Go-Kart simulator

genting go kart

This is the last game that we played. It's a Go-Kart simulator with real Go-Kart controls and I managed to soundly beat Rene (or was it the other way round?).

Abandon all hope, all ye who enters here...

breakfast with rene
(Insert caption)

I'm too tired to post, I feel like throwing up all the time and I haven't slept or eaten in days. I'm looking forward to this impromptu meet though coz it's a road trip of sorts. I'm flying to JB later in the morning to meet up with a Singaporean girl (I didn't want to go to Singapore just in case I look (un)worth enough of a urine drug test) before getting tickets and going straight to Genting Highlands. I'll post again later today if Genting has Wi-Fi.

breakfast with jb

I have not slept nor eaten (except juice which gave me horrible acid reflux) for several days. I can even see a pair of socks under the table which morphed into a whale and then became a bundle of leaves tied together. It only happens when I'm concentrating or talking (used nitrous recreationally and lose my train of thought before asking again with regard to the subject). ;)

I've been sleep deprived almost every day and I get Risperdal 6 mg combined with Remeron 45 mg. The high is compounded with heroic doses of tramadol (500 mg) and codeine (600 mgs) and the highlight of the show was the only thing that is suppressed not sleeping.

I'm taking Concerta, Ritalin and phentermine since pentermine is easy to get and it's goes for 50 cents per capsule at that place I told you about. I'm flying off to JB early this morning, fly again to KL again before going to Genting Highlands for a break from everything.

I'm on enough diazepam to kill a small horse in my system. I just took around 45 x 10 mg and 3 x 2 kg ) tablets of clonazepam and apparently my mom told me I was sleep walking and wanted to go to McDonald's and also talking to myself on a cell phone (!) swear I had my friends on the "cell phone" to talk crap with. It was so bizarre coz the weird visuals were not over yet coz I saw my dad praying in the corner of the room but when I looked there was no one there.

breakfast rene

It's not even an isolated incident; I did that air phone thing at least 20 times. My mom is worried about my nocturnal habits. I think it's nothing but then again that's moot since I'm going with a friend

I hope they have Wi-Fi over there...

P/S - I did that imaginary "cell phone" to call and they actually answered in the perfect pitch and timbre, I swear to God they are so real. Sleep deprivation visuals are fun.

OMG! I read the escalator and I'm going so late, which is a Bad Thing (TM).

I'm still waiting for my McDonald's order, did I order or was it closed?
