The KL breakfast

| 34 Comments | No TrackBacks
kl nasi lemak

You know, back where I come from, very few people could claim they had nasi lemak for breakfast. Sibu is a cultural abnormality - it looks predominantly Chinese (although the population census will tell you it's predominantly Iban) so the usual breakfast is noodles or something to that effect.

kl nasi lemak van

Well, over here in KL, I've been eating a lot of nasi lemak. I've actually grown quite fond of this stuff, craving it even. I look anxiously out my condo window at 7 am sharp every morning to spot the nasi lemak vendor pulling up in his trusty old van and rush down to buy some while it's still warm.

I still remember a snippet of conversation that occurred the first time I went:
Nasi lemak man: Ada apa lagi?
HB: Ketam. (Crabs)
Nasi lemak man's wife: Ketam tak ada, tapi kerang ada. Si ham. (We don't have crabs but we have clams)
HB: Oh ya, kerang. Brain not functioning today.

I love the couple, they're very friendly people with a great sense of humor. I've seen a lot of people from the neighborhood offices purchasing his warez too. Nasi lemak for breakfast is pretty common over here in KL. I've grown to love the stuff - I like it with clams (kerang, not ketam), lots of sambal, a fried egg and a piece of chicken drumstick.

kl nasi lemak macro

It's pure artery clogging goodness! ;)

(which I'm sure I'll regret when I'm 50 and my cholesterol level starts to soar)

Penang BBQ Pork Noodles @ Sing Long

sl bbq stall

I have been told that there's a really good BBQ pork noodle stall at a coffee shop called Sing Long (Tian Long in Chinese) and the three of us headed down for breakfast to check it out. The stall has an impressive repertoire of BBQ pork products displayed at the see-through stall casement.

sl chef

The chef hails from Penang and serves authentic Penang BBQ pork noodles. The noodles are hand made and not the regular ones we get over here, but the ones from Penang/KL. The texture and diameter of the noodle is much thicker - it's akin to Hokkien noodles.

sl breakfast

The stall doesn't just serve BBQ pork noodles but also BBQ rice. However, their forte is definitely the pork noodles. It's their signature dish and it would be heresy to order BBQ rice instead of noodles, which one of my coworkers did. A lot of people throng the coffee shop before office hours to eat breakfast so you have to go quite early to avoid the crowds.

sl bbq pork noodles

This is their famous Penang BBQ pork noodles (RM 4.50). I have seldom sung praises about coffee shop stalls, but I am yodeling now. It just has to be experienced - the sinful crunch of the crispy pork, the tender juiciness of the meat and the sprinkling of spring onions on top creates a dish that is greater than the sum of it's parts.

Best place for BBQ pork noodles in Sibu. Hands down.

ferry kebab meat

...one Saturday evening

kebab autumn

16:20 - Autumn does some mental arithmetic in her mind collaborating her menstrual cycle to evaluate the safety of a bout of carnal gymnastics at the back seat of my car without prophylactics.

16:23 - I storm the pearly gates with the purple-headed devil. She gave me the mark of the beast.

kebab lovebite

16:42 - Play hide the hot dog while pondering on what to have for a snack after skipping lunch. Making grass sandwiches (+6 bonus points if you get this euphemism) made us think of kebabs so off we went.

ferry kebab

16:50 - Ferry Kebab is a popular kebab stall in Sibu that is renowned for its delicious kebabs.

kebab meat

16:51 - Kebabs over here are not chunks of meat on skewers but a huge mass of meat which is sliced off into a hotdog bun.

kebab mix

16:52 - The meat slices (you can opt for chicken, beef or a combination of both) are mixed with onions and cucumbers (both finely diced) as the filler for the bun.

kebab squirt

16:53 - Generous squirting (of the chilli sauce bottle) is applied on the bun and it is wrapped in a plastic wrap.

autumn kebab

16:56 - Autumn with her chicken kebab. She's not a big fan of beef.

kebab naked

16:59 - A closer peek at the resplendent folds of Autumn's luscious wet, pink...kebab. ;)

kebab feed

17:06 - Ferry Kebab is delicious! It makes for really messy eating, but it's fun to eat it at the roadside in the car for the authentic experience.

ferry kebab stall

17:13 - I drove back to take a photo of the stall coz I forgot to take the entire Ferry Kebab stall setup.

...a different kind of food review. Kaizen! ;)

Azza Burger review

azza burger

Azza Burger is not just a mere burger stall, it's practically an institution here in Kuching. Located at the Kuching Waterfront, this Ramly burger stall caters for drunks and other nocturnal creatures from its notorious open-till-late (or early, depending on how you look at it) hours.

azza burger menu

The most popular burger here is the Special Azza Burger (Semua Ada) which translates to the Special Azza Burger (With Everything). It goes for RM 5 and contains one beef patty, one chicken patty and one sausage wrapped in an egg. It's very popular with stoners.

azza burger grill

The wait at Azza Burger can be anywhere from 15-30 minutes due to the large amounts of customers patronizing this burger stall. There are seats provided for the wait but most people just wait in the car. I personally like to entertain myself by watching them grill the burgers.

azza burger special

Special Azza Burger is the best thing to order and its value for money at RM 5 coz you get everything (except the kitchen sink) with it. The entire concoction of beef, chicken and sausage is wrapped in an egg like the photo above and slathered with chilli sauce.

azza burger special bite

This is what the Special Azza Burger looks like. Its takeaway only and the burgers are great. I highly recommend the Special Azza Burger with everything on it. It looks like a soggy mess but it tastes great!

Uncle BOB fried chicken

uncle bob stall

Uncle BOB is a fried chicken franchise that holds claim to the fact that their breast meat is as "smooth as a drumstick", without the skin and the fat. There is one stall at the Jalan Song food court.

uncle bob operation

I decided to check out the breast meat (the only cut they sell) to see if it really tastes like a drumstick. I'm a big fan of dark chicken meat (thighs and drums) but not white chicken meat (breast) so I'm something of an authority on the subject. ;)

uncle bob fried chicken

There are two varieties - spicy and normal and we got them both. I wouldn't say that it's as smooth as a drum but it comes close. The texture doesn't feel like breast meat, which is a Good Thing (TM). :)

dannys hartamas square

Danny's All American Gourmet Hot Dogs is located at Hartamas Square and sells authentic gourmet hot dogs. I went there with Grace [graceshu.com] during the weekend to check out the place.

dannys all american hot dogs

Danny's All American Gourmet Hot Dogs [dannyshotdogs.com] is run by an American expat living in Malaysia. Larry also has a blog [blogspot.com] and I got to know him during one of my trips to KL earlier this year. He's very passionate about authentic food and quality control so I was intrigued by the invitation to sample his gourmet hot dogs.

dannys big juicy ones

The key ingredients for the hot dogs have been painstakingly sourced from various places (including importing in some components) by Larry and there are about six different hot dogs from the various implementations in the different states in the US. The menu items goes for RM 7 - RM 9 each and it's an appropriate price for the portion and quality of the hot dogs.

dannys texas bbq dog

This is the Texas Style BBQ hot dog with beef bacon on top, which is this week's off-menu special. It has a huge gourmet hot dog inside (as all of Danny's All American Gourmet Hot Dogs have) and is topped with BBQ sauce and pieces of crispy beef bacon.

dannys texas bbq dog flash

Here's a closer look at the Texas Style BBQ hot dog - I've long extolled the virtues of BBQ sauce (which I consume liberally) and this is one of my favorite hot dogs. It's perfect for a more sensitive palate as it isn't as spicy as some of the other hot dog offerings.

dannys texas chilli dog

This is the Famous Texas Chili Dog which I've had the pleasure to sample the previous time I was in KL. It's an authentic Texas Chili Dog with all the toppings that the name implies. The chili is made of a "special blend of imported spices and chilis consisting of Pasilla, Ancho, New Mexico, as well as Jalapeno and Cayenne chilis to give it it's authentic and unique taste".

dannys texas chilli dog flash

Here's a closer look at the Famous Texas Chili Dog - it's filled with chili and peppers (chillis) and it's just right on the spiciness scale. The onions and peppers adds a lot to this hot dog. The recipe is a closely guarded secret and although the hot dogs may seem to be priced higher than commercial "hot dog" franchises - it is important to note that the premium is for authentic and uncompromising quality ingredients!

dannys dallas dog

The next hot dog that we tried is the Dallas BBQ Dog. It's a little similar to the Texas Style BBQ hot dog (at least to my untrained palate) but with slightly sweeter notes.

dannys dallas dog flash

Here's a closer look at the Dallas BBQ Dog. It's a great hot dog, I've always found that BBQ sauce enhances everything in Western (as in popular lingo) cuisine, like MSG enhances the flavor of Eastern cuisine.

dannys chicago dog

This is the Quissential Chicago Dog - it's a minimalist hot dog in comparison to the Texas style hot dogs. The Chicago dog contains pickles, mustard, tomatoes and light sauce instead of the more palate intensive Texas style hot dogs.

dannys chicago dog flash

Here's a closer look at the Chicago Dog...it's a light hot dog, perfect for those who like more conventional hot dogs. It also comes in a poppyseed bun. Mmm...poppyseed. ;)

dannys larry me

Larry was kind enough to provide different samples of the hot dogs for our consumption and one testament to the quality of the food products an eating establishment produces is that the proprietor eats it himself. Go to Danny's All American Gourmet Hot Dogs at Hartamas Square to check it out!

Thanks for a great night and the chance to appreciate real American style hot dogs!
