What exactly is kampong chicken? Translated literally it would "rural chicken" but it actually means free range chicken. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's a different species (at least, a different kind of chicken) since it's much smaller and leaner than the usual poultry offerings.
I went to Kampong Chicken Eating House in Singapore right before we were slated to come home. The bus was about to leave so we decided to head down here for some nourishment before we departed.
This is a photo of a bowl of plain steamed chicken rice. Mundane? It looks that way but it didn't TASTE that way (which was what compelled me to snap someone's bowl after I partook of mine). The individual grains of rice is soft, fluffy and infused with the essence of chicken goodness!
I have a huge appetite (which explains my current weight) so I ordered a chicken drumstick with some chopped liver and an egg...
...and a quarter of chicken (thigh and drum) to complement the order and make it into a belly rubbing, over eating experience. ;)
It tasted good to me and everyone else on the table agreed that it was better than most chicken rice outlets. Good company, good food - it's twice the fun just like the Xpax XXL double bonus. I particularly enjoyed the tender and moist chicken.
I finished everything so that's gotta say something right?

It's in the middle of the night. I only have bread as dinner because I am down with fever...and I am about to sleep (and I am a big fan of chicken rice and I esp love kampong chicken) and I felt a little regret of clicking to read this post before I go to sleep because now I feel hungry!!! =(
One chicken drumstick with some liver and egg only ah? Must go makan with me next time...one WHOLE duck/normal size chicken between the two of us! >P

if im not wrong, the ayam kampung actually means those chicken raised up in 'kampung' or they r kept freely in an open area, whereby they got to look for own food (wombs n insects), and got to exercise more than farm chicken, this explain why their leaner and their meat texture r firmer (muscular).
i don't really like kampung chicken cause they tend to be more 'rubbery' and less meat.and i find it weird why most ppl favor kampung chicken? Heh. Even my dad - he never wants to buy the normal chix!

You know how some kampong chicken has black skin? Is that a different kind of chicken? It's the one the Chinese use to boil soups.

free range chicken yeah. are you sure its ayam kampung, so fat ler and the liver look like as if the chicken were forced to eat... the color so fatty yellowish more like singapore chicken rice to me ler :)

A lot of chicken can be rear free range. The species differ and thus the texture as well. It all depends on what they fed. Example - GuangZhou free range chicken eats bamboo leaves.
The black chicken is called SILKIE - species.
All depends on how u cook them. . . .and looking at that . .we may one day go makan and enjoy a full bird plus all the innards . . .yummy
