I arrived in KL last Monday to do some stuff related to my impending sister's wedding. I was supposed to meet up with Grace at 6 pm after she gets off work coz I was crashing at her place at Bangsar Heights for two nights, so I had an entire afternoon to kill.

I arrived at around 12 pm and met up with Julian Hopkins, who is doing a blog research project. He's doing his doctorate in cultural anthropology about bloggers and wanted an interview with me. Read more about this research program about bloggers here.

Julian wanted to bring me to this famous duck rice stall but it was closed so we ended up eating at the equally renowned Soo Kee Ipoh Chicken Kueh Tiaw soup.

I expected the kueh tiaw to be like the Sarawak type of kueh tiaw (which is thicker) but the ones served here are much thinner and it's really good.

The broth was absolutely infused with chicken soup and it's very tasteful and not too filling as to induce post lunch coma.

I love this stuff, I haven't had it before since I'm not a big fan of soup dishes...until now. The Soo Kee Ipoh Chicken Kueh Tiaw soup really is that good. Anyway, Julian brought me to Monash University after that for a taped interview, which took up most of the afternoon. He kindly sent me back to KL Sentral so I could meet up with Grace. Julian is a really nice person so help out with his research program okay? :)

Grace took me back to her apartment in Bangsar Heights where I stayed for the next two nights. I wasn't really comfortable with the idea of sleeping with my future in laws since I smoke and all that and Grace's room is a smoke-free room (as in you can smoke for free ;)).

I wasn't due to meet up with my sister's fiancé's family until the next day so I hooked up with the Nuffnang team for dinner at Jalan Alor.

Timothy suggested Restauran Sun Chui Yuen which is a bit of a tourist trap.

I had a couple of beers...

...and we ordered quite a lot of food.

L-R: Samantha, Timothy, Nicholas, Yee Hou, Grace, Huai Bin (me).
Thanks for the dinner Nuffnang! It was great meeting up with all of you. The Nuffnang team are some of the nicest people I've ever met. :)

Jalan Alor! I miss the food heaven! :)
You so famous hor even those nuffnang plp looking for you. At least got side income blogging not like last time no advertisement income. Hey the way I see it you are the No. 2 famous blogger after that Kenny Sia. Since you missing for a while you lost alot of your reader. Anyway glad you catching up and average update of 4 entry per week.
omg! jalan alor :P when mention about food there. that's the most reasonable and good place to dine in KL. Did you buy any bak kwa?
The koew teow there has damn alot of MSG, but its damn good also huhu.
Rat infested tourist trap, would have thought Tim would have took you somewhere better :P
i've been to soo kee for the past 15years. the aunties working there are always arguing and fighting with each other. it used to amuse me when i was a kid. lol.
Clare: Hmm...Jalan Alor evokes totally different memories for me. Memories of my chemical romance. There's a lot of dealers there.
Roland: Eh, what side income? Very sensitive word, this one. ;) Barely able to cover my hosting and stuff. I try to post at least once a day while is what I used to do all these years.
(='.'=): Nope, I didn't get anything on this trip coz the reason I went was to arrange my sister's wedding stuff. She's in NZ now and getting married and having the reception in KL and then Sibu.
Dr. Tan: I love MSG! The more the merrier. ;)
ShaolinTiger: Heh! I love the memories of the place though. I used to walk here from Jalan Sultan Ismail (where I used to work in KL) and then get some stuff (not food) and then go back. I wonder what happened to all the Nigerians hanging around the convenience stores...
wen: I didn't see them arguing. Would have loved to. :)
It would have been interesting. Heh!
Not post related:
MI!: Yeah, being the best man for 1k weddings is nothing to sneeze at. I don't even have 1,000 friends so I can't beat his record. ;)
I'll go for the Ferrero Rocher one instead.
Hey, we saw one yesterday, eating a 12 inch pizza in one minute. Can you do speed eating? Or eating 37 cockroaches in one minute. You just need to eat 38 to beat that record. :)
I guess I could do this Pizza thing but cockroaches ... meeh I guess I'll go for the Pizza lol where do I contact the World record ppl :D
Grace has such a loooong hair.
Authentic Ipoh rice noodle is very yummie. I haven't had that for ages. Erm.. feel like flying home now.
Yeah! You and your chemicals :P
PS: Hmm...future in laws *smirks*
Jalan Alor? Eyew.....!!! I agree with shaolin tiger! Expensive and not nice and lots of msg!!! Ruby will beat any of them hands down - price and taste!!!...But I agree with you about the kway teow! They've nicer ones over there - finer, translucent! Ours white, thick and coarse!!
In-laws? Future in-laws?...Did I read right? Did somebody mention that???...You need a wedding singer, huai bin? LOL!!!
you're sort of cute... and those images of your butt were kinda impressive.
any chance of you being gay?
Glad you liked the soup, maybe next time you're in KL we can check out the duck rice :)

Peace.
MI!: Good luck! It's not that easy, eating a 12" pizza in one minute. Nothing to sneeze at. I think the Ferrero Rocher one is easier for me, since I used to BINGE on that stuff. I shall attempt this weekend and pack on a few unnessesary pounds. ;)
I have no idea how to contact them but I intend to find out this weekend. Will email you when I get the officials to respond. Cheers!
cynthia: Yeah, she has really, really, really long hair.
Ipoh rice noodle (kueh tiaw?) is really different from the ones over here. Ours is thicker, coarser and doesn't taste that good in soup dishes. This one is great. I bet it'll be good fried too.
Clare: My Chemical Romance (the band) is actually a variation of the title of a Irvin Welsh short story compilation called Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance. I read that in an interview of MCR (the band) somewhere. I have two Irvin Welsh books at home, the obvious two - The Acid House and Ecstasy.
suituapui: MSG is good for you! ;) Hey, I just realized that you're a bit different, in a sense. Smokers usually like very salty, very MSG, very spicy food due to the desensitized olfactory senses.
Yeah, I like the thinner version of kueh tiaw instead of the lumps we get over here.
Wedding singer eh? My mom is making the video for the banquet, perhaps you shoulk talk to to her about singing on it. ;)
annoynymous: Thank you. I appreciate the kind comments. I'm 100% heterosexual though, but would not be adverse to being (platonic) friends with males with a different orientation. :)
julian: Cheers Julian! Thanks for lunch. Yeah, we should check out that duck rice place next time I'm in KL. :)
Bill: Hello there! It's been a while since I've heard from you. It's good to hear that you're well. I shall be reading the posts when I get home from dinner tonight. Cheers!
